All answers are good (craigslist, ikea) but do check your local Goodwill shops. Most are very nice now and you can find cool vintage-style furniture (if you like that!) that can be painted or used as is. You might be surprised at what you find and it can be fun to seek and find pieces that look good together even though they are not made as a set. Personally, I prefer the eclectic look of mix and match. Good luck in college!

    craigslist.com

Look for sellers in the town where you are going to school. That way, not a long distance to move it, and most graduates just want to get rid of their stuff and they are understanding of your financial woes (trust me, I understand).
