Don't even consider declawing your cat. If your cat is ever outdoors and under threat he will not be able to defend himself or climb to safety effectively.
Exercising their claws is a behaviour that is natural to cats so provide a scratching post to encourage this, in a way that is acceptable. Help your cat to use the scratching post with rewards and encouragement and if necessary demonstrate how to use the post by scratching it yourself with your nails, the sound should encourage imitation.
All male cats should be neutered unless they are specifically to be used for controlled breeding, this helps to prevent unwanted litters and the heartache they cause and is part of responsible pet ownership.

Scratching is just a natural cat behavior it helps them to sharpen their claws and to shed the thin coating on their nails. Neutering him won't make him want to stop scratching anything, but does have amazing health benefits.
You can try a scratching post, but ours still enjoy using the furniture. I also tried putting aluminum foil where they scratch, it's not pretty, but they hate the texture of it. I've also heard using double sided tape for a few days or shaking a can/jar of pennies every time you catch them will help build an aversion to that behavior.

If all else fails use the trusty squirt bottle/water gun approach. You just have to be sure to do it every time you catch them doing it.

getting him neutered may not calm him down, my boy is neutered and hes still crazy at 6yrs old.
all i can suggest is scratching poles if you don't already have them or you can get little rubber things you put on your cats claws. its not cruel at all, but only good for indoor cats because if puss needs to defend himself outside the plastic things make the claws useless.
they used them on queer eye for the straight eye. sorry i don't know what they are called but if you could find them they would be good..

pls pls pls dont declaw puss!

    1. It is indeed inhumane to declaw a cat. Don't do it.
    2. Trim his claws with a nail clipper every two weeks, Jus don't trim too deep.
    3. Get him a rattan cushion or rug, and when he scratches that, pet him and say good cat etc. when he scratches anywhere else, grab him gently, say NOooo, and put him on the rattan rug. Do that every time you catch him on the cat. If he were a kitten, he would get the hint after 2-3 times. At his age, I don't know.
    4. If all else fails, buy claw caps, they are removable and they don't hurt the cat (www.softpaws.com)

I recently had to have mine declawed and he is older too. He did very well through it all, the pain meds they give them now do very well. Now at least I am not constantly getting upset at him.
