Where to go for reasonable contemporary furniture?

My Husband and I are moving into our first home together and need suggestions as to where to buy some decent contemporary furniture...i.e. dining room set, couches, cocktail table, etc. We'll even buy on line if need be. We live in milwaukee but are willing to drive a bit if it good stuff. We just really want a cool dining and living room. Any thoughts?

Ikea in Schaumburg might be a good place to start. It's only an hour away, but you'll need a truck to get everything home!! It's still cheaper than paying shipping costs!

I'm not much into contemporary furniture personally but I do get several mail order catalogs that sell contemporary furniture. I'm more the shabby chic/eclectic type. Money doesn't seem to be an issue with your purchases so I've listed a few rather pricey catalog/sites - the first three mentioned are kind of high end merchandise but you'll get a good product that will hold up and be happy with.

If you're furnishing a new home I'd too would go for finely crafted furniture that will stand the test of time over cheap furniture that you'll be replacing in a few years. So, if money isn't an issue I'd suggest Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware (don't be fooled by the name, although they do carry restoration hardware they also carry all manner of home furnishings) and Robb & Stucky interior design and patio furnishings.

Home Decorators have a large assortment of what I'd consider contemporary furniture and I have ordered from Home Decorators Collection before and for the price I paid for what I bought - it was sufficient. I purchased a bathroom vanity with granite top and a matching mirror to go above the vanity. The granite is wonderful but the wood part of the vanity is not hardwood and a bit sub-par in my opinion...however...I could not have gone, anywhere, (emphasizing anywhere) and bought just the granite top for what I paid for the entire piece. The mirror is very nice and is solid wood. I also ordered some cubicle storage units (contemporary) for my son and those were great as well. I have not, however, ordered any upholstered furniture from them but they do seem to have a large assortment of contemporary styled furniture. The prices just can't be beat in my opinion but as I said I can't attest to the quality of the upholstered pieces. Do check them out though; if nothing else it might give you ideas on what you're looking for and their accent pieces are nice as well as affordable.

The last two links are various online (or mail-order) catalogs; the first of the two links is where I got the second link after clicking on "home decor". Maybe you'll find something in those pages that I'm not familiar with. What fun this will be for you both, congratulations and happy shopping!!!
