What furniture store will finance on not so great credit?

I'm looking to purchase a sofa, however due to some mistakes made in my early 20's, me credit score isn't the best. I'm looking for a nationally known furniture store (i.e., Levitz, etc), that I 'might' have a good chance of being approved by if i apply for financing? I don't want to apply to several companies and end up getting turned down and lowering my score even more, so I want to apply to just one that I know I'll have a good chance of getting approved by. My credit isnt horrible, but I do have a few dings. Thanks!

For something that you might be able to afford without going deeper into debt you might even try the Salvation Army. They sell re-upholstered sofas and chairs that looks great and just like new.

All depends on your exact score but if it is under 600 or so you will have to resort to something like rent to own, etc... Sometimes if you can pay for like 1/2 of the purchase price they may charge the rest.

Places that sell borax furniture often will finance any purchase.

Places that sell better furniture are generally pickier.

who on earth would recommend rent a center or any rent to own.
these are sharks that PREY on people with bad credit, and the poor.

i'd rather sit my butt on the floor before i'd sign a contract with any of those crooks. i'd buy one of those blowup plastic couches for $20 at walmart and cover it with a sheet first. i'd buy 4 $5.00 plastic chairs and strap em together with duct tape.

they dont even report your payments to the credit agencies so, there's no benefit there, either.

It is true. Rent to Own centers should be your last resort. I rented from them when I was in college. I can now say I am the proud owner of a living room suite and a tv, but you will be paying double and sometimes triple of what you would pay if you had gone right to rooms to go or some other furniture store. Some of the rent to own places have 90 days same as cash. That is exactly what I did. I paid the monthly payments until I had the case to buy it at the original list price. They should also credit what payments you have already made. But, go when the furniture is brand new. You dont want something someone else had done the you know what on it.

probably the worst choice is the rent to own, rental purchase or rental ownership. This isn't exactly a rip-off. Many customers rip off the rental places so they have to use the math to make the numbers work.

Example; a sofa/love seat comes into a rent to own at $400.00 in order for this to work for rental companies they "step on it" 4 times; i.e. the cost to you is $1600 ($400x4=$1600 divided by 78 payments = 20.00 a week; then "insurance" and "reinstatement fees" if you are so much as a day late.

The other option is the "borax house"; depending on where you live may or may not find them. Our family has been in the borax furniture business since 1922. The way we work it is also a numbers game. We limit our downside risk with a down payment. That $400.00 living room group is marked at a "number"; i.e. $800.00 to $900.00 In our store the closer works the customer for the biggest down stroke they can get. With shaky credit I will go to the dance for say $250.00 down and finance the rest at 21% over a 10 to 12 month contract.
This does establish credit if the store is a member of the credit bureau.

Borax houses are better for people with bruised credit; most of them will even work with you if you miss a payment where the Rental folks just pick up the stuff and find a new sucker.

The credit oriented borax house is a dying breed; I do very well with my credit furniture store 3rd generation. Don't want it for my kids though. Most of these stores were owned by Jewish and Lebanese immigrants; many have great reputations and have been in business for generations. For furniture you generally pay about what you would at a big box retailer. The borax house charges slightly higher finance charges. Still hundreds less than rent-to-own. Most borax houses that are still around are in smaller towns in the deep south or midwestern small towns.

Here is a tip, go to the yellow pages if the store says "Century Furniture & Appliance" the odds are that they are borax because credit houses carry both electronics, furniture and appliances. Your major furniture retailers do NOT sell appliances. Most of the credit/borax houses are in older run down areas of most cities and serve a working class customer base. Most customers are VERY loyal to the store that provides EZ credit. I have some customers who have been with us for over fifty years.

    Good luck in your search.

We had our furniture financed (and the credit was not so god after all the money spent on renovation etc...) at feldmanfurniture.com. Here is the link to online application: http://www.feldmanfurniture.com/resources/credit-card.html
The APR could have been better but overall the experience was positive.
